LeMieux says Mack is "the Charlie Sheen of Florida politics"

U.S. Senate candidate George LeMieux skewered Congressman Connie Mack on Wednesday for years of overspending and decades-old bar fights, quipping Mack's record makes him the "Charlie Sheen of Florida politics."

"You can't come away from a rap sheet like this and conclude anything other than Connie Mack IV is the Charlie Sheen of Florida politics," he said. "Mack IV does not have the temperament or the character to serve in the United States Senate."

LeMieux called a news conference in Tallahassee to react to a Miami Herald story that used court records to show how Mack, among other things, spent about $2,257.91 more monthly than he netted as a member of Congress, borrowed money from his senator-turned-lobbyist father to pay his 2004 federal income taxes, and had property liens filed against him.

The story also described pairs of road rage incidents and bar brawls between 1987 and 1992.

LeMieux stood between two posters depicting timelines of the court records detailed in the Herald story, one for Mack's "history of violence and abuse" and the other for "financial misconduct."

Mack said his financial problems were related to his divorce on Sunday following an appearance at a Florida Federation of Republican Women candidate forum. LeMieux won the group's straw poll, the group announced Monday, with Mack finishing third to retired Army Reserves Col. Mike McCalister.

LeMieux knocked Mack for knocking Newt Gingrich on his campaign, former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, and, most recently, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson for using an agricultural exemption to avoid higher property taxes in Brevard County.

Mack's criticism for Nelson preceded new questions about his own homestead exemption. Asked about it Wednesday, LeMieux said he intends to study up on the homestead law but he expects it will ultimately be decided by the courts.

"What I found most interesting about that story is that Connie Mack IV is listed as a resident of California on the documents that were filed in California in conjunction with (his wife) Mary Bono's homestead," he said.
