Mario Diaz-Balart picks congressional seat, before redistricting maps are final

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart will be running for Florida's new Congressional District 25, as it will be redrawn under once-a-decade redistricting.

Diaz-Balart, a Miami Republican, currently represents Congressional District 21. But about half of that district will fall under CD-25 under redistricting plans expected to be approved tomorrow. As far as we can tell, he is the first South Florida congressional delegation member who has told folks which district he will be vying for, even though the proposed maps are not yet final.

U.S. Rep. David Rivera, also a Miami Republican, represents the district now numbered CD-25. He may now move to another, equally Hispanic-friendly, seat. Rivera succeeded Diaz-Balart in 2010.
