‘I am leaving the tolerance of bigotry’: GOProud co-founder Jimmy LaSalvia quits Republican Party

Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder and former executive director of GOProud, an organization of conservative gay Republicans, announced Monday afternoon he has quit the Grand Old Party.

LaSalvia is now “No Party,” according to his blog:

Today, I joined the ranks of unaffiliated voters. I am every bit as conservative as I’ve always been, but I just can’t bring myself to carry the Republican label any longer. You see, I just don’t agree with the big-government ‘conservatives’ who run the party now.

The other reason I am leaving is the tolerance of bigotry in the GOP. The current leadership lacks the courage to stand up to it – I’m not sure they ever will.

LaSalvia frequently battled other conservative Republicans, including Miami attorney Al Cardenas, chairman of CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference.

In 2012, LaSalvia told CNN:

“There were folks… that wanted us barred from CPAC simply because we're gay. And they took advantage of the leadership change at the organization and were successful in keeping us out this year.”
