McCoy believes himself the leading candidate

Mike McCoy is scheduled to interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, the last of the three second-round interviews the team is conducting as it tries to find a new head coach. But this one might be more significant than the other two in that McCoy tangibly believes the job is his to lose.

Acccording to a source, McCoy considers himself the front-runner in the Miami job and is so confident of this status, he took his name out of consideration for the vacant Oakland Raiders job. McCoy was scheduled to interview for that Raiders opening in Denver on Wednesday but ultimately declined.

The source, who requested anonymity, said the Raiders were not thrilled with the apparent snub but were made to understand that McCoy believes himself the front-runner in Miami and he didn't want to do anything to hinder that status.

Both Todd Bowles and Joe Philbin, Miami's other two finalists, are also on the radar for head coach jobs with other teams but have not removed their names from the running of any potential opportunity.

It is unclear if McCoy was led to believe he is the front-runner by the Dolphins. The Dolphins are not commenting to the extent they declined to even confirm which candidates are being interviewed in the second round. The club did confirm completed interviews during the first-round of interviews.

The team did tell both Bowles and Philbin that today's interviews "went great," according to sources. The club is clearly not showing its cards.

McCoy has the enviable position of being the last of the three finalists to interview for the job. On Wednesday, the Dolphins talked to both interim head coach Bowles and Green Bay offensive coordinator Philbin for a second time.

McCoy will get the chance to the leave the lasting impression on owner Steven Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland.

Philbin, meanwhile, got an endorsement for his Dolphins candidacy from current Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think he would make an excellent head coach,” McCarthy told Green Bay media. “I’ve said that before.”

Philbin has been with Green Bay since 2003 and has been offensive coordinator since 2007, although McCarthy calls plays. The Packers have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage each of the past five seasons, including third in 2011.

As Philbin, McCoy and Bowles compete for the job interviews, there is starting to be behind-the-scenes lobbying for each candidate from parties partial to one or the other.

One source asked why the Dolphins would be so enamored with McCoy as to give him a second interview, noting that the Broncos started the season on a 1-4 slide and ended the season on a 1-4 slide. In fairness, the Broncos did win the AFC West title.

But even that title was getting shot down by sources partial to the other candidates.

One of those noted that the only reason the Broncos won the AFC West is because since-fired Dolphins coach Tony Sparano opted for a two-point conversation against the Broncos early in the fourth quarter of their October 23 game. The conversion failed, giving the Dolphins a 12-0 lead instead of a 13-0 or 14-0 lead.

Had Sparano kicked the extra point, the Dolphins might have withstood a breakneck Denver comeback and still won the game 16-15 in regulation instead of losing 18-15 in overtime.

Interesting ...

That people close to the other candidates are bringing up these issues might also be a sign they believe McCoy might be Miami's leading candidate and he might need to be cut down a couple of rungs to even the playing field.

I feel for all these reporters of Dolphins news. Right now, probably Armando and a host of Others are running like mice, trying to be the first in publishing that McCoy will be our next HC. McCoy will be our next HC. Don't exert yourselves too much.

Fuuck Omar!!

Maybe we can get Steve Spags for Def Coord. That would be nice.

Hey...

McCoy was born the same year the Dolphins went undefeated...he was also born on April Fool's Day.

DOB: 04/01/1972

Spags now New Orleans DC just heard it on NFL Network

Just in. The Dolphins will announce their coach next week..

Please hire Todd Bowles. Why would anyone want to Bronco's OC? They sucked! And Philbin will end up having a mental breakdown over his sons death.

HIRE TODD BOWLES

Hey, one of my son's name is Omar.

The good news just keeps coming!

Good, Todd Bs. We can watch the Playoffs and then conjecture if he was a good choice or not.

Move the stinkin Dolphins to L.A and stop embarrassing S Fla.

This just in, the Miami Dolphins will announce their head coach AFTER season ticket renewal forms are due.

McCoy offenses were not great.

Good move by the FO. And you were saying about them...

Ross is desperately trying to sell more pieces of the team before the ship sinks completely.

Mc Coy was not a very good OC. We should go with either Bowles or the Philbin...Bowles is the safe choice but if you want to roll the dice then go with Philbin.

PS-I can't be saved from being a Dolfan but if Ross and Ireland go with McCoy, I will not let my two young daughters continue to be Dolfans! For crying out loud, they have their whole life ahead of them!! I will have to turn them to look at organizations that "get it".

Dansby has to pissed he joined the hapless Dolphins.

Ricky Williams got out just in time! LOL

I'm sure Daboll would leave if he could get hired ANYWHERE ELSE!

It is funny!! Last year most of the fans complain about Daboll!that his offense was worse than Miami! And now, no one said bad thing about him.
Now you are doing the same witn McCoy, If he is selected, we have to wait and see, and alse we need to know who will be his OC....

They are organizing another FIRE IRELAND plane sign for the home opener if he is still with the team. I already agreed to contribute.

Mexican fin fan,

Daboll sucks. Matt Moore made him look adequate but he was 0-7 with Check Down RoboHenne.

Cry me a river.

When a team procrastinates this long to make such an important decision, all you end up with for choices are people who have never had to be put into situations that would make or break them. The bottom of the barrel, this is Mr. Ross' fault and he has been taking advice from Ireland, so it's a no-win situation for my beloved Dolphins any way you look at it. It's a sad,sad situation and it's getting more and more absurd, to quote Elton John.

Ok,Dolphinmike (I was not saying daboll is good or bad, only that most of the fans speak without knowing, Everyone said he was very bad, and now most of the comments I see are positive. nobody really knows if McCoy or the others will be Cam Cameron or McCarthy.
we will have to wait and see what happens.
(sorry if my English is not very good)

Henne went 0-2 realistically speaking(0-3 technically). Matt Moore started 0-5 really(0-4 on the books).

Even if you don't know your facts, know THIS: Daboll has been our best hire since..........since Nolan!

Dooh!

Give Ross another F. He failed on his coaching search, we will be stuck with a novice, and at the same time he lost the best coach on the team. The team is going nowhere.

Mexican Fin Fan,

I jumped on the Daboll bandwagon from the start.

The guy was working with a terrible roster and made Colt McCoy look like a legimate QB.

Now that Nolan is GONE, Daboll is without a doubt the best Coach we have on staff.

That means we can safely assume he'll be gone soon.

AwwwwwwwwwwRiiiiiiight ACORNS!!!!

Go! Go! Go! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

odinseye what is with your constant defense of born losers? you defended henne endlessly, sparano, and now dabol. 0-7 = everybody is to blame.

How good did McCoy and Hillis do this year without Daboll?

Enuff Said!

Daboll is an up and comer. Ireland don't like anybody upstaging him. Ireland will fire him and he'll get on with a solid career.

Troll, you're making shyt up. Stick to playing with your retarded TWIN Brother "Small's" Heh, heh.

Hola Mexican fin fan de cuando en cuando leo tus posts, yo también soy de México, saludos.

I don't think Daboll sucks, is not the best either, but in what he doing, play selection is good, the overall strategy is on the head coach but the detail is on the OC, and I think Daboll is good, since the dolphins hired him for me was an Ok.

I don't know if McCoy will be a good HC, (the HC in my little understanding of the game) need to have other characteristics like strategy, leadership, well communication with the media etc.

omar kelly is excited to see tannehill play in the senior bowl. if there is a writer that is completely clueless about what is going on but is more than happy to give his opinion on something it is omar kelly.
tannehill broke his foot and won't be playing. the broken foot happened over a week ago. omar's comment was made about 40 minutes ago.

you know and i know and 100 other bloggers know that you sukked hennes weewee for a long time on this blog.

I didn't defend Henne half as much as I derided Hennings. BEFORE we even played game 1 under SpOrano and Hennings I was posting how he would be our downfall.

I think I was on the MONEY.

PS: Just like McCoy, Henne and Moore played their best under Daboll. Henning is poison to young QUARTERBACKS. Never developed a SINGLE ONE in 155 years of coaching football.

While Henne most likely will never be an elite QB, I guarantee you playing for SpOrano and Hennings sen his skills and career back a decade.

Take a big hit of the pipe and babble away Bro, you still won't be able to get around the fact that Daboll is the best OC we've had in nearly a decade. The best Coach on the staff at the moment-PERIOD!

Buh Bye Now!

NICE POST and Funny Too!

Omar "On The Spot" Kelly, follow that guy on Tweeter!

PS: If he even realizes it yet, I'll bet he's embarrassed!

I think Odinseye is very objective, because he understand very well the game. I understand that in a fan view point, we as fans go to extremes "love and hate", so is very appreciable people like Wolf, Odin, Lou, etc.

I was the biggest Henne Fan/Supporter/advocate on this blog. What does that have to do with you making shyt up in your earlier post?

When Fiedler donned the Aqua and Orange, I supported him and hoped for the best. The same for Woodley, Beck, Griese Jr., Green and ALL THE REST, except Culpepper. What about it?

I love and support MY MIAMI DOLPHINS!

Even when I don't agree with all their moves. Even when I think they're making colossal mistakes, come Kick Off, I BLEED AQUA and ORANGE!

Having said all that, what does any of it have to do with the shyt you're making up?

PS: Just like McCoy, Henne and Moore played their best under Daboll.

oh really? henne did not win one single game under daboll. try to make a coherent point, i guess that is difficult for an ash brain like yourself.

odinseye is in babble drool mode now. just spouting foam without thinking. his normal catatonic state.

Seriously, why not Mangini? Who cares if he failed before. That is part of the process. He would hit the ground running faster than any of these other wannabe bobbleheads. None of this 'top 3' candidates will last more than 3 years.

Mangini ? Lets hope not. Did this former coach win at all ?

I defended Henne, THAT MUCH is true. I threw blame all over the place in going overboard defending him too. I can admit it. I think it's a damn shame, but all I wanted was for someone/anyone, to finally step up and lead this team like we need it to be led. So, I was wrong, it ain't the first time, won't be the last.

As far as SpOrano, I never really defended the guy. I liked what(little)I knew of him as a person. But, the fact is, I never really liked his coaching style.

As for Daboll, I don't feel he's needed any defending since coming to Miami. He's far from perfect. But I think he's done an exceptional job getting this offense installed during some trying times. I think he's done better than anhy other OC here in YEARS!

DO YOU GUYS HAVE JOBS?

TLKING ABOUT A TEAM WHO STARTED 0-7 IS LIKE LOOKING TO HAVE A DATE WITH YOUR EX WIFE FOR 34 YEARS ........

Hey, listen retard, Henne set records week 1. The defense ranked last in every category and Marshall and Bess lead the league in drops for the first three weeks of the season.

You're the ash Brain if you don't understand that Henne played his best 2 to 3 game stretch under Daboll in a brand new offense.

He clearly played head and shoulders above anything he did under Hennings-EVER! Week two he was leading the league in rushing PUNK! Moving around in the pocket, extending plays and putting the ball right in his receivers hands.

Take you ametureish trolling elsewhere Meth Head. You BORE ME!

Why won't they at least interview Billick, or Marty Shoten? If they want a HC with experience? Just don't get it. They better not make a hurried, premature decision just cause they're desperate. This is an extremely important move for this team. The second biggest move is QB. I hope they have some kinda plan in the works. Moore is not it.

Daboll is just terrible. He was fired in Cleveland for good reason. He's on the Fins cause he cant get a job anywhere else!

Posted by: odinseye | January 19, 2012 at 08:15 PM

you are praising 0-3. not to mention henne was the worst qb in fins history in the last games of the previous season.

tell me who is the ash brain.

Rumor has it, Mike Zimmer to Tampa Bay Bucs. Steve Ross can you see my middle finger ?

Speaking of Henne I don't be surprised if a more rounded and better coached team (like SF 49's), takes him in this off season as a free agent and convert him in a second Brees.

Is anyone else analyzing the top 8 picks in the draft.

Anyone looking at the first 8 teams and their team needs?

Anyone racking their brain trying to figure out some **VIABLE** trade up scenarios?

I have and for the life of me I can't figure a scenario in which we land Luck, Griffen nor Blackmon!

(SIGH...)

The one thing that no one has yet explained - how are ANY of these choices any better than Sparano???????

I think I exaggerated a bit in my last post, again fan point of view, excuses.

ODIN,

AREN'T YOU GETTING TIRED FROM REPEATING THAT DRAFT CRAP LIKE IN THE LAST 10 YEARS,YOU KEEP SAYING THE SAME CRAP ?

Sparano said he'd consider Henne for the Jets practice aquad. He needs time to "develop". LMAO!

odin,
I already did the first two rounds of the draft and am currently finishing up on the 3rd round but, unfortunately, I can't say that I have picked either Griffin or Blackmon for the team.
I know I keep plugging it but it makes it easier than rehashing on here. You can look at it on:

www.professorlousnfldraftsite.com

I also did an ultimate dolphins mock which I know just about everyone would disagree with but I feel it's a bit easier to do what I suggest than try and trade up into the top 4.

Daboll is just terrible. He was fired in Cleveland for good reason. He's on the Fins cause he cant get a job anywhere else!
Posted by: Hollywood Dave | January 19, 2012 at 08:20 PM

This may be true.

However, in just the past two seasons, he made McCoy, Henne and even Moore look better than they ever had.

He did the same for Hillis and what do you know, now Reggie Bush suddenly has his best season as Pro! I think Reggie and Hillis both broke a thousand on the ground and contributed greatly with receptions.

So, it's pretty easy to just throw around a bunch of opinons(it's our right), but when start digging into those pesky little things called FACTS, things aren't always as they seem.

Odineyes wins.

I've never seen a worse pro QB then HennePuke.
