McCoy believes himself the leading candidate

Mike McCoy is scheduled to interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, the last of the three second-round interviews the team is conducting as it tries to find a new head coach. But this one might be more significant than the other two in that McCoy tangibly believes the job is his to lose.

Acccording to a source, McCoy considers himself the front-runner in the Miami job and is so confident of this status, he took his name out of consideration for the vacant Oakland Raiders job. McCoy was scheduled to interview for that Raiders opening in Denver on Wednesday but ultimately declined.

The source, who requested anonymity, said the Raiders were not thrilled with the apparent snub but were made to understand that McCoy believes himself the front-runner in Miami and he didn't want to do anything to hinder that status.

Both Todd Bowles and Joe Philbin, Miami's other two finalists, are also on the radar for head coach jobs with other teams but have not removed their names from the running of any potential opportunity.

It is unclear if McCoy was led to believe he is the front-runner by the Dolphins. The Dolphins are not commenting to the extent they declined to even confirm which candidates are being interviewed in the second round. The club did confirm completed interviews during the first-round of interviews.

The team did tell both Bowles and Philbin that today's interviews "went great," according to sources. The club is clearly not showing its cards.

McCoy has the enviable position of being the last of the three finalists to interview for the job. On Wednesday, the Dolphins talked to both interim head coach Bowles and Green Bay offensive coordinator Philbin for a second time.

McCoy will get the chance to the leave the lasting impression on owner Steven Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland.

Philbin, meanwhile, got an endorsement for his Dolphins candidacy from current Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think he would make an excellent head coach,” McCarthy told Green Bay media. “I’ve said that before.”

Philbin has been with Green Bay since 2003 and has been offensive coordinator since 2007, although McCarthy calls plays. The Packers have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage each of the past five seasons, including third in 2011.

As Philbin, McCoy and Bowles compete for the job interviews, there is starting to be behind-the-scenes lobbying for each candidate from parties partial to one or the other.

One source asked why the Dolphins would be so enamored with McCoy as to give him a second interview, noting that the Broncos started the season on a 1-4 slide and ended the season on a 1-4 slide. In fairness, the Broncos did win the AFC West title.

But even that title was getting shot down by sources partial to the other candidates.

One of those noted that the only reason the Broncos won the AFC West is because since-fired Dolphins coach Tony Sparano opted for a two-point conversation against the Broncos early in the fourth quarter of their October 23 game. The conversion failed, giving the Dolphins a 12-0 lead instead of a 13-0 or 14-0 lead.

Had Sparano kicked the extra point, the Dolphins might have withstood a breakneck Denver comeback and still won the game 16-15 in regulation instead of losing 18-15 in overtime.

Interesting ...

That people close to the other candidates are bringing up these issues might also be a sign they believe McCoy might be Miami's leading candidate and he might need to be cut down a couple of rungs to even the playing field.

It seems in all the Dolphin fan polls that I've seen Philbin is the hands down favorite and McCoy is the least favorite. So with the recent history of this franchise I would say McCoy is going to be the next Dolphin's HC.

Armando -- What happened to Carmichael?

Did he interview privately? Did he not get the helicopter ride so he turned us down?

seems like ireland prefers a coach he can "control". there are some better candidates out there with experience; mangini, childress, haslett, billick, nolan, schottenheimer, etc. these guys can put together staffs fairly quickly and hit the ground running.

The few good decisions this pair Badman (Ross) and Rubber (Ireland) have made is by mistake. The rest of the decisions (all bad) were made consciously by them.
The Joker and the Pinguin are inside this organization.
Have you all considered the possibility of having a woman as HC ?
Like Sandra Bullock ?
Badman & Rubber, she can be the 4th candidate !

Philbin, McCoy or Vince Lombardi for that matter...it won't make a difference. This franchise is doomed until we get a new front office.

The poll on Bleacher Report has Philbin at 87% to McCoy at 7% and Bowles at 6%

I still believe I'd be the best candidate

Here is my Ultimate Miami Dolphins 2012 Mock Draft:

http://www.professorlousnfldraftsite.com/professor-lou-s-ultimate-miami-dolphins-2012-draft/

there is no one to hold ireland accountable for anything. nolan sided with sparano which lead to his undoing. crowder and penne believe ireland is the problem, i agree.

Thank you, Badman & Rubber, for making this team so funny outside the field and so boring inside. First the comedy about who went to be the starter QB, next about when you went to fire Sparano, next the Fisher act, and finally, the fat lady is singing: Nolan gone and 3 guys behind the curtain...and millions of bastards waiting to see who will remain behind when it goes up.
Thank you, thank you, thank you !

Way to put yourself out there Lou. Nice website! But I see my nightmare going like this on draft day. We WIN! the coin toss and are picking #8. RGIII slides and we know Jzx isn't going to take him. In the very last second of Jax's pick Seattle trades up and grabs RGIII.

We suck big time.

As the stomach turns.........

Last night on the Sirius XM blitz they were talking about what a great hire Chip Kelly would be for the Colts. The opinion was that he is very good at constructing a staff and program and that within 2 years he would be a very good NFL coach.

Or, maybe they should give serious consideration to hiring the Harbaugh sister, Joani...

THIS IS GETTING FUKING RIDICULOUS. MIKE MCCOY? NEWS FLASH; THE BRONCOS OFFENSE WAS PATHETIC THIS YEAR! PA-THE-TIC! TIM TEBOW FUKING BLOWS AND WILL GET BENCHED SOME TIME NEXT YEAR. THE OFFENSE THAT TEBOW WAS RUNNING WAS PATHETICALLY BAD. THE MEDIA CREATED TEBOWS GREATNESS AND NOW MIKE MCCOY IS GETTING REWARDED FOR IT. WHAT A FUKING JOKE. THIS FRANCHISE MAKES ME SICK

LOL! So, you're waking up with the night sweatins'.

Here's my ultimate mock draft for the dolphins:

1. Robert Griffin

All other picks, who cares.

hhhh

I would love to see Robert Griffin III in a Dolphins uniform. The concern is, as others have stated, what they would need to give up to get him.
I also don't think anybody in the top 5 is going anywhere, whether they get a huge offer or not.

I like McCoy the guy has some good ideas as to how he fits the players he has into a system that works well for them.
Also he did lots for WR Brandon when they were together in Denver???
Could be a really good moment for us to have a hot read offence. We have a good QB with Matt in there. He can make the plays, we can get more OL help thru the draft, some DB's, RB's or WR's that are there to be grabed. Then you get a QB in the later rounds. There are some really good young talent there to be had. Lets just hang on for the ride cause it will get better. I have been a fan since the first day this team was created and I will always be a fan, not matter.

Interesting take Lou. You don't think the number two and three picks would be up for grabs?

I guess it depends on how big the hard on minny and St Lou have for kalil and blackmon. In that case I don't see the top 4 moving either. And no point trading up for anyone else.

Interesting that I saw a mock draft with Washington picking tannehill after a trade down.

Griffin III would make my year but it is very doubtful. It is likely to be either trade back or yet another offensive lineman.

Im so tired I just want to go back in bed.

Tebow Time in Miami!!!!

Tebow to LeBron TD!!!!!!

C'mon Dolfans there are still a few tix left for this weekend game. One lucy fan will take a picture with QB Tim Tebow and TE LeBron James.

Halftime show will feature Fergie, Will Smith, Jada Pinckett Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Dr. Phil LOL

For those of you bashing Ross. Remember he was the one who wanted Harbaugh. His only fault was he didn't know people like Mando have their hooks in the insider of the organization. He didn't realize how quickly information gets leaked. His judgement on Harbaugh was correct. As for people complaining about no high profile coach, well he did try to go after Fisher right! Who's really left? So all you idiots who know it all, just shut up and go back to playing madden on your xbox, no doubt that is why you are experts!

McCoy will blend will blend with what we have to make it work. Philbin will bring a new system to adjust to, maybe a little bit of an upheaval. Bowles will be the so-so Sparano type 'O'. (yawn).

inimounts-no way does cleveland stick with mccoy. he is horrible. i guess every former GM and "draft guru" got that wrong. sure there are surprise picks but usually not in the top 3. forget luck forget RG3. ain't gonna happen. the browns can draft him and still have another 1st rounder to get him a weapon to throw to. no one ahead of us is going to trade back. blackmon, is pretty much the only playmaker and he won't be there at 8 or 9. that's reality. in your fantasy scenario we would somehow get RG3 and blackmon. maybe we trade away our next 3 drafts? pure fantasy. we won't get either. both may be got before the 5th pick. luck, blackmon, RG3 and kalil will be the 1st 4 picks and the current top 4 teams will be picking them.if the skins or fins try to trade up to the #2 pick cleveland will c-block us.

as far as solai goes. do you even understand the 3-4 defensive philosophy?? in our defense the NT's job is to completely clog up the middle. make the other team double team you so dansby and burnett can make tackles and our ends and olb's can pressure the QB. solai's main responsibility is to limit the other teams run game. we where 3rd against the run this season. i'd say that is success. you've compared him to 1 guy. vince wilfork. the pats are a 4-3 defense. that defense has 2 DT's and different responsibilities. wilfork play end and dt in that defense. bb moves him all around. also solai is a FA again so trading him is gonna be tough. hopefully we can resign him for under 10 million a season for 3 years. maybe even less if we garauntee a lot of it. but don't kid yourself into thinking NT's are a dime a dozen!! it's one of the toughest positions to fill.

c63- last i checked jake long is a perennial pro bowler. so i think left tackle has worked our pretty good. the right side can't run or pass block. i guess it will magically get better in your mind? or will your fantasy QB just run away from constant pressure? o-line may not be sexy but a strong o-line anchored by 3 1st rounders will improve both the run and passing game. we did have a 1000 yard runner and receiver even with a crap right side. imagine way we could do with both sides of the line being able to run and pass block. maybe we won't lead the league in strip-sack fumbles like we did this year. what value pick will be there at 8-9? i would say it's martin or reiff.

Im sold on a guy who gets compaired to don Shula!!!!

Bowles is clearly the best of this group - I mean Denver's OC? They had the worst offense in the league - they scored 3 points at home in a game they needed to win the division. What are they thinking? I can see an offensive guy from Green Bay but Denver - leave it to Rossland to reward mediocrity.

Is anyone else having issues posting on the blog today?

Everytime I post it's not showing up. There is no profanity or any reason why it shouldn't post.

I'd like to punch all those fans in the face that showed up here after the dolphins beat the mighty chiefs, bills, and redskins to rack up those wins this year.

How costly were those victories?? Didn't get us playoffs, and we still get no respect around the league.

This Fukkin team can't even lose right.

Showed up here to gloat about those wins anyway.

mark in toronto- nice to see another guy grounded in reality!! those will be the top 4 picks picked by the top 4 teams. the only trade i could see happening is cleveland moving from 4 to 2 to c-block the skins or fins from getting RG3. though i doubt they will have to. i don't see the rams trading back that far unless they get a kings ransom. and no matter what we offer cleveland is in better position and has more picks.

Mark in Toronto - I said after the first two meaningless victories - the Dolphins su*k at su*king. Anyone can win when the pressure is off - if they would have just had a monumentally bad year it would change this franchise for the next 10 years. Well, there's always 2012 - with Rossland at the helm maybe Barkley or Jones is in our future after all.

Just hope we get a 'young Don Shula' and not a 'young Cam Cameron'.

Bowles,

He is the worst candidate to me. Nothing personal against him but he is a Parcell's guy and so was Sparano. There approach may be different but their principles the same. Bowles is the ultimate fall back plan and to me that spells trouble. The second Miami is under .500 and Gruden or Cowher dip their toe in the coaching waters he will become a lame duck coach because everyone know he is the fall back plan.

He has been on their staff for 2 coaching searches and has coached 3 games btw which Miami was going 2-1 with him or with Sparano. If he was the overwhelming choice then Ireland and Ross would have made him the HC. Instead they spin it as they are doing their due diligence, which is BS! Bowles represents the same old guard in Miami. Parcells see's it his way so Sparano see's it that way so Bowles see's it that way. Get ready for the continuation of Matt Moore, Hartline, Fasano etc!

please don't make me vomit with tebow to miami talk!!

i would think the reason mccoy is praying to get this job is to get the he|| away from tim tebow. he's tabowing to get away from tebow!!!

andy,no

Mark is right, there was no point in winning thoughs games. I wish the team quit on Sparano earlier.

Andy -- yesterday i had issues posting to the site same as you. I would write something, click post and then refresh the page and it would be gone.

Today, so far I am not seeing the issue.

andyNJ- i typed post but forgot that freaking stupid security thing!!! i hate that dumb thing!! the wost thing is it seems to always be below the screen so if you forget about it and hit refresh, bye-bye post!!

the tell tale sign the you're a good pro is by adapting to situation. McCoy proved that by changing Denver's offense for Tim Tebow. McCoy would do well uder adversity as Miami has been through a lot of

"i would think the reason mccoy is praying to get this job is to get the he|| away from tim tebow. he's tabowing to get away from tebow!!!"

You May be right. Also, consider that Philbin might want to change because of personal reasons.
Either way/one would be great for the Dolphins!

Philbin is the best choice!

Philbin may not be an overwhelming favorite. He has never been a head coach well neither have the other 2 and if your argument is he doesn't call the plays in Green Bay then please find another argument and I'll listen. You do realize that he breaks down all the game film every week, the opponents every week and relays that information to Mike McCarthy. He then along with Mike McCarthy installs the offensive game plan. There is no shame in not calling plays on game day. Andy Reid never called plays for Green Bay and Philly has one of the best offenses because he had the background working with Holmgren. Gruden the same! Sean Payton before he was in Dallas he was in NY and was stripped of his play calling duties by Jim Fassell which the offense was much better under Fassell and made the playoffs that year. Also in Dallas Payton was again stripped of play calling duties in favor of Maurice Carthon of all people.

So take your pick of reasons with Philbin but not having the responsibility of calling plays shouldn't be one of them. Reid, Gruden examples proves that it is possible to be part of team and move and be successful. Sean Payton one of most innovative play callers in the league today was once thought of as a bad play caller in multiple stops so it's a different angle but what I am saying is calling plays doesn't neccessarily make or break a coaches capabilities.

Philbin gives Miami an EDGE at their only opportunity to get a potential good to franchise caliber QB in Matt Flynn as well. I know the argument there and it is valid that he only has 2 starts but 480 yards and 6 TDs! That is a heck of a sample. The obvious thing is that with Philbin and possibly Tom Clements going to Miami along with Flynn is the best chance Miami has at solving their decade plus problem of not having a long term solution at QB. No Andrew Luck and would have to give up the farm to get RG3 and Cleveland and Washington would be stupid to not get in the mix for him.

Philbin is the best choice!

The thought of Tim Tebow in Miami with McCoy as Our head coach also crossed my mind.

Why McCoy? Do they want to bring back the Wildcat? Denver didn't exactly have a potent offense.

thanks Texas and jaison maybe Im missing that. Thanks again!

I'm casting my vote for Philbin(is he Regis' cousin, brother?) However, Bowles is 1 and 0 versus the wets, that is worthy of consideration!

maybe i have more perspective not being from florida, but tebow really sucks. under 50% passing?!? the only reason they beat the steelers is because half the defense was on the bench and they completely sold out to stop the run. add to that no starting RB and big ben's inability to move or step in to his throw and you have a disaster for the steelers.

i don't hate tebow as a person. he does good things in the community and in other countries but he's better eat spreading the word than playing QB. he's deleted fan base shows just how christian this country is.

Philbin reminds me of Cam Cameron. An old white man who wouldnt connect with the players today.

deluted not deleted!! sometime i hate auto spellcheck!! GRrrrrrrrr!

Tim Tebow wins.He finds ways to win ballgames. The Broncos don't have many playmakers.

Who cares anymore?

By the sounds of things maybe they deserve McCoy. He sounds just as arrogant as Ross and Ireland.

I find the comments in RE to this coach or that coach being a 2nd or 3rd tiere coach laughable. Nobody has any idea how these guys are going to work out as HCs. Nobody has any idea what "tiere" these guys are on. It's laughable.

There are numerous examples throughout the NFL of assistants/coordinators with little to no name recognition becoming HCs in the NFL and succeeding. Just one example (there are numeous examples).

Mike Tomlin...As it turns out, he's a much better HC than he ever was as a coordinator. He was solid as a DB positions coach with Tampa and then became the Vikings DC for all of ONE season and boasted the leagues WORST passing defense.

The Phins interviewed him largely to satisfy the Rooney Rule...many thought the Steelers interviewed him for the same. As it turns out, the Steelers ownership and management saw something in Tomlin, beyond the black and white of his lone season as a DC, and made him their HC. The rest is history.

I wasn't around this blog back then, but I can only imagine the comments when Tomlin interviewed with Miami. I'm sure they went something like "What they hell are they interviewing this 3rd tiere coach for?" "He's supposed to be a DB coach, but had the worst passing D in the league." "This guy has virtually no experience...only one season as a DC." "OMG, the sky is falling and our franchise is a joke interviewing this guy."

Sound about right?

Then of course, you have Cam who was at the top of the coordinator world with one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL in San Diego....we all know how that hire turned out.

My point...we're all idiots if we think we know anything about any of these guys and bigger idiots if we think we know how any of these guys are going to turn out.

Laughable!

I must say I respect McCoy's confidence but it may be worth noting and this is calling it like it is, does anyone expect the Raiders next HC not to be black? McCoy may just be playing it smart by showing 1 team his confidence in himself and another a F U, because I'm not a serious candidate for the job anyway.

Pat Kirwan made a great point he said Raleigh McKenzie reaching out to McCoy for an interview is usually to see how a division rival feels about the current status of their team. Kirwan said he did it with the jets with rival coaches when they were searching for a HC.

According to Kirwan after all the important questions and team lay outs go a line of questioning goes something like this.

GM: What do you see as our biggest weakness? What do you feel about the QB position, players etc? How were you guys so effective doing this?

So McCoys confidence maybe more of knowing it's going to be his best or only real shot at becoming a Head Coach.

wolfman,

Good stuff I agree. None of these guys are over whelming in average football fans mind but must be respected enough to receive interviews. Guys clown and hate on Ireland all the time the truth of the matter is he knows more about football then we could ever imagine. It doesn't mean he will always make the right choice but he knows football.

Mike Tomlin has been a nice steward of the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers. Most fans though that their personnel dept. is the best in the NFL.Most of the current players were coached by cowher.

Breaking news on NFL network just Jason La Canfora said Mike McCoy will be named the next Head Coach and Todd Bowles will be named Defensive Cordinator

We are destined to have ANOTHER crap coach.
